Pools are the highlight of every summer; however, pool care and maintenance can quickly become a neglected affair as soon as winter rolls in. While you may not plan on using the pool in wintertime, our team at the Perfect Pools recommends that it’s ideal to clean them on a regular basis.
Here is a checklist that you should go through to winterize your pool the right way.
Scrub the Floors and Walls
Before you begin with the winterization process, it’s essential to clean the pool thoroughly. Bring out your best cleaning gear and scrub the floors and the walls. This will ensure that any existing algae and bacteria are put to rest and the rest of the winterization process goes smoothly.
Water Chemistry is Crucial
The chemical composition of pool water should remain balanced. Otherwise, it can wreak havoc on the condition of your pool surfaces and plumbing. pH levels, chlorine, and calcium levels should all be inspected and kept at correct levels.
pH higher than 7.6 promotes the buildup of calcium. On the other hand, pH lower than 7.2 tips towards the acidic scale can deteriorate the pool tiles.
Chlorine tablets can be added to kill off bacteria and viruses and remove any contamination in the water. However, ensure that the chlorine particles do not exceed the 2 – 4 pm limit, as excessive chlorine can irritate eyes and skin.
Pool Accessory Maintenance
Swimming pools come with a range of different accessories, which ensure the proper functioning of the pool. Winterization is not just limited to the cleaning of pool water, but should be extended to pool parts as well. Pool parts like filters, skimmers, and pool pump should be checked from time to time. Moreover, excessive water should be drained off from all pool pipes. Freezing temperatures can cause the water to expand, leading to cracks in the pipes. This can prove to be an unnecessary plumbing expenditure when it’s time to reopen the pool for summers.
Bring Out the Pool Covers
Wintertime calls for extra covers, even for pools!
Since pools are not used until the arrival of spring, it’s better to keep them covered. This measure prevents the buildup of leaves, debris and algae in the water. Try to ensure that the pool cover is correctly secured in place and doesn’t get blown away by the winds.
Moreover, snowfall can mean ice accumulation on the pool cover. Allow the snow to melt before going in to remove it, as it minimizes the chance of you accidentally tearing the pool covers.
You can put these tips to the test to ensure that your pool remains clean throughout the winter and your outdoor living space looks as pristine as ever.
